On January 24, 2024, in active response to the national arrangements on science and technology innovation during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period and to support the high-quality development of the stem cell industry, the kickoff meeting and project unveiling ceremony for the Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Plan major science and technology project "Key Technology R&D for Innovative Mesenchymal Stem Cell Drugs" (project no.: Zhong 202323N251) — led by Shenzhen Beike Biotechnology Co., Ltd., jointly applied with Sun Yat-sen University and Shenzhen Saidong Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd. — was successfully held at Beike Biotech's headquarters. More than ten guests attended the kickoff meeting, including: Beike Biotech Chief Scientist Professor Cai Cheguo, Beike Biotech Vice President Liang Xiao, and Dr. Liao Yan of Beike Biotech's R&D Center; Associate Professor Chen Xiaoyong of the Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Research Center, Sun Yat-sen University; technical researchers Zhou Wujiao and Wu Xumin of Shenzhen Saidong Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd.; and other leaders, project heads, and key team members from the project lead and partner organizations.

The kickoff meeting opened with remarks from Beike Biotech Chief Scientist Professor Cai Cheguo. First, Professor Cai congratulated the project team on coming out on top through layers of selection. The Shenzhen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Plan major special programs have rigorous selection standards and technical requirements, and this is a recognition by the relevant government authorities of the solid groundwork and advanced technological vision of the "Key Technology R&D for Innovative Mesenchymal Stem Cell Drugs" project team. He noted that Sun Yat-sen University has excellent foundational conditions in life sciences with strong teaching and research strength and is a top-tier university in China; Saidong Intelligent Manufacturing is a national high-tech enterprise specializing in the R&D and production of digital and intelligent production lines for cell preparations. Beike Biotech's collaboration with both organizations brings together cutting-edge research strength and achieves deep integration of industry, academia, and research. He expressed the hope that the project team would seize the opportunity of the high-speed development of life sciences, drive industry development through the project's innovative achievements, and contribute to human health.

At the kickoff meeting, project leader Dr. Liao Yan presented the research organization to attendees, identified the key scientific issues, and then explained in detail the overall research content, expected goals, and the division of work among partner units, with particular emphasis on the breakdown of overall tasks and the schedule. The project, led by Beike Biotech and jointly applied with Sun Yat-sen University and Shenzhen Saidong Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd., aims to address the bottleneck challenge of standardized mass production of universal stem cell drugs, establish a standardized clinical-grade mesenchymal stem cell bank along with mesenchymal stem cell culture systems and evaluation methods with proprietary intellectual property, elucidate the mechanism of action of innovative mesenchymal stem cell drugs, and build a technology development platform for innovative mesenchymal stem cell drugs, thereby enabling large-scale production of uniform, stable, and low-cost universal stem cell drugs.

Following this, hosted by Dr. Liao Yan, and amid warm applause from the audience, project team experts and attending guests jointly unveiled the "Key Technology R&D for Innovative Mesenchymal Stem Cell Drugs" project. The launch ceremony was successfully completed, marking the official start of all project research work. Each participating unit will, in line with the overall project plan and according to high standards and rigorous requirements, complete the project's tasks, advance high-quality development of innovative cell drug R&D, and provide more rapid and precise cell therapy solutions for the clinic.
